About Mica

IT IS A SHINY SILICATE MINERAL WITH A LAYERED STRUCTURE FOUND AS SANDWICH IN GRANITE AND OTHER ROCKS, OR AS CRYSTALS. IT IS USED AS A THERMAL OR ELECTRICAL INSULATOR.

Mica, a collection of hydrous potassium, aluminium silicate minerals. It is typically found as massively crystalline material in sheet, flaky or layer structures. It is clear with a pearly lustre on cleavage faces, often having a sparkly look in rocks. Its outstanding physical characteristic is that individual mica crystals can easily be split into extremely thin elastic plates.

Mica is natural mineral and very good non conductor and heat resistance insulator.

Mica has the unique characteristic of excellent dielectric strength, and capacitance stability, low power loss (high Q factor ), high electrical resistivity and low temperature coefficient and capacitance. It is noted for its resistance to arc and corona discharge with no permanent injury and has little or no effect when exposed to electronic radiation.

Mica is incombustible and non-flammable and can resist temperatures up to 900*C (1650*F) depending on the type of mica. It has low heat conductivity, excellent thermal stability and may be exposed to high temperatures without noticeable effect.

Mica is relatively soft and can be hand cut, machined or dye-punched. It is flexible, elastic and tough, having high tensile strength. It can withstand great mechanical pressure perpendicular to plane but the lamination has cleavage and can be easily split into very thin leaves.

Mainly found mica minerals are:
Muscovite, Phlogopite, Biotite, Margarite, Lepidolite, Paragonite and Clintonite.

As per chemical and atom structure, most common two grades of Mica used commercially in variety of application:
  • Muscovite Mica
  • Phlogopite Mica
